i just got myself a brand spanking new wireless 'N' router and a 'N' PCI card adapter for my desktop to go with it. router installed OK. but the card didn't and when i go to restart toe pc because it said that i needed to put the card in when i already had... it dies
stupid thing just gets stuck on the "ASUS A8N-E" opening screen. AND i can't even get into start up because the keyboard doesn't have power going to it in that stage of startup (apparently).

does anyone have any idea of what to do ?????

specs:
A8N-E (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=455&l1=3&l2=15&l3=171)
AMD 64 x 2 4400+
4 GB generic pc3200 RAM
vista home premium 32 bit.

remove card reboot install software first then install card. Try that first...may need software in first to recognise hardware

Agree. However note that often computers will not boot if there is a buggered or incorrectly inserted PCI card present.
So you may have a dud card.

see if it will boot in safe mode(after removing & replacing) - then check for problem devices in device manager. If card drivers did not install correctly then you would be able to repair or replace them at that point.PC's will lock up at the hint of a corrupted driver & that would obviously be the case here.
Make sure you have the latest drivers as often the out-of-box drivers can be obsolete by time of purchase -
or yes you got a dud unit?

is there a way to load up using safe mode without going into setup. like a button on the actual motherboard. because the bios won't load as far as let me "press DELETE to enter setup".
I tried to remove the card and reboot, but again it failed. which gives me a nasty feeling that it may not even be the card.

I'm gonna give D-link tech support another try (the first Indian guy wasn't much help)

cheers for the posts guys

**** EDIT ****

never mind guys, i put the card back in, this time with the aerials on (don't know if it made a difference or not). rebooted and POOF it worked flawlessly. perhaps i was having a bad night.

ohh well
thanx for your ideas again lads

That sounds like card was not seated properly or a bad/dirty contact then. Had that occasionally on an old AGP mobo, just seemed to want the vid card jiggled in the right way before it would detect it.

i hope that is all it was. otherwise i'm gonna put a nice little air hole in the side, roughly in the shape of my right boot

another thing.
thought i would put this in the same thread (so i'm not spamming)
i am looking at setting up a rain configuration but i am unsure if it can be done the way i want ....

i'm thinking of buying 4 500 GB (or 640 GB) hard drives. but i want the system to think it has 1 x 1TB harddrive (1st 2 HD's) which will have a mirrored backup (2nd 2 HD's) ......

just wondering if it can be done ???? as i will proble need a pci RAID card.

also i'm looking at a new screen (22inch ASUS VK222H Black WSXGA+ 1680x1050 2ms Res. DVI / HDMI Contrast 5000:1 Speakers WebCam) from gamedude, just wondering your thoughts blacky ......

cheers

Ah you mean raid
What you are after is RAID1+0 (raid 10) or 0+1
Assuming you still have the Asus A8N-E then you cannot do 1+0, but you can do 0+1 (there is a difference). Have a read of
and
If you want raid 1+0 then yes you will need a PCI or PCIe (preferred) card that supports 1+0. Be prepared to pay a fair bit ($200.00 and up) for a half decent raid card.
$600.00 or more for a really really good one.

Personally I would not bother, it just adds another point of failure to your system and if the raid falls over then it can mean rebuilding the array from scratch which will lose you everything.
Also note that you generally cannot move the drives to a different brand of raid controller intact. In other words if the controller falls over and you cannot get the same controller, a raid rebuild is necessary which will destroy all data on the drives.
There are some exceptions to this in the high end raid cards, but I doubt you would want to pay anywhere up to several grand for a top line enterprise level raid card.
